(More customer reviews)Any clarinet player using the originally provided mouthpiece (stock) will find that the 5RV improves their sound dramatically. Many reputable middle and high schools require students to use this mouthpiece (or the B45). For students using an R13 Clarinet, they should be sure to get the mouthpiece that Selmer manufactures to fit that instrument - 5RV13 or B4513. If you're considering one or the other, it's best to try them both as they have different sounds and can help solve different issues for each player. The B45 has a wider opening (between reed tip and mouthpiece tip) and therefore allows a slightly fuller tone. But it comes at a loss of control, especially in the upper register. Another consideration would be the M15 (13 series!!! A=440) that a lot of high school and college players really like as well. Many companies will ship all three and allow you to test them first. If you're just looking for a quick improvement, the B45 is probably your best bet. If you're a little more serious, you should take the time to determine what fits you best.
Finally - Use good reeds and rotate a few at a time!!!
