(More customer reviews)Aulos or Yamaha? My only Yamaha is a cheap soprano model made in China that lacks a thumb rest (adjustable or fixed). This Aulos is far superior to that but I know nothing about upscale Yamaha models (some of which have appeared on recordings I have and sound quite good). This is 3-piece. That means that cleaning is easier and you can rotate the bell to position the bottom holes at the best angle for your little finger. It includes a clip-on, adjustable thumb rest, making it much easier to play. The timbre of most notes is quite pleasant but some are not so nice. For USD10 or so more, you can get the A703B with a superior windway and much more consistent timbre over the 2 octaves. I am a novice, and I will provide some novice information. The soprano recorder sounds an octave higher than the written notes, and the holes are close enough together for even children to play (perhaps too close for someone with large hands). The alto recorder plays a fifth below the soprano (starting at F above middle C instead of C above middle C). It is considerably longer and harder to reach the bottom holes. But it has a mellow, nice timbre. The tenor recorder plays as written (starting at middle C) but is twice as long, more expensive, and difficult to play. This Aulos comes with a cloth bag with drawstring. The more expensive ones come in a faux leather bag with zipper. All Aulos models are made in Japan and all that I have seen are high quality (even this very low-priced model). Aulos model numbers are a little mysterious but you can reliably follow the pricing. English fingering = Baroque fingering. That is the fingering used by most players and more recorders are available in that fingering. German fingering simplifies F and complicates F sharp.
