(More customer reviews)Armstrong 102 is a Student (Beginner) C foot Flute that is closed hole and silver-plated with flat key cups to prevent air leakage. Heavy plating and sturdy mechanism assure that your student will play this model for years. Adjusting screws are top mounted (easy repair). The only difference w/Armstrong 104 is undermount adjusting screws (cosmetic). Other options are Offset G (easier to play with small hands) or inline G. If you see a student flute with a curved headjoint (Armstrong 1042H), it is for students (or adults w/shoulder problems) who can't reach the keys on this model (straight head joint).
My daughter's Armstrong 102 is being played for the 5th year in High School Marching Band. This is an excellent, closed hole beginner flute. It is silver plated (an inexpensive option to introduce your child to the instrument). If you buy a used one, you will see cosmetic wear (scratches, dings, etc.). As long as there are no large dents in the headjoint (all three pieces stay together well), and the Beryllium spring key mechanisms (not out of alignment) or Double Skin Pisoni pad seals (not torn) are problem free, a used Armstong 102 is an inexpensive option for your child to try. Once they decide to stay in band, you should review your options to upgrade to an open hole flute.
